NORTEL
INTRODUCTION:
Nortel is a communication program designed for people who hate
memorizing key combinations. Nortel is unlike any other dos
based terminal because Nortel offers you a totally graphical
environment making it very easy to use. Get things done fast
with Nortel because all you need is your mouse, you can zip
through the menus at lighting speed no keystrokes required.
Yes you can get a graphical environment with a Windows
terminal but if you ever tried to use a terminal for windows
you know it's very slow and somewhat complicated to use.
Nortel also has a built in editor which comes in very handy.
And one of the best things about Nortel is it has internal
multi-threading (internal multi tasking) this means you can do
more then one thing a time such as use the editor at the same
time as dialling a BBS!!!!

Mouse (Microsoft compatible).
Hard disk.
Modem.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT NorTel:
This is the first release of Nortel therefore there might be
some bugs please report all bugs to the EZEware and be sure to
describe the dos error number and where abouts in Nortel did
it occur. Do not report bugs in the text editor, we will be
heavily modifying it and we know there are bugs in it which we
didn't fix yet.
Registered users can request features they want added to the
program. Here are some example features that will be added to
future released of Nortel.
1. More terminal emulations This version of Nortel has ANSI
and TTY (plain ASCII). Please tell us the ones you'd like.
2. Rip Graphics compatibilities and maybe even Roboboard
compatibilities (VGA emulations).
3. Fax transfer and receive. This will allow most fax modems
to send and receive faxs. Faxs can be written using any
texted editor.
4. Back ground file and fax transfer. This will actually allow
you to shell to dos while downloading, and ran most program
normally.
5. SVGA support so you fit more then one window on the screen
at once such as the dialling directory and the terminal on
the screen at the same time.
6. Sound card support: We will add neat sounds, and speech
synthesis which will say what is sent onscreen.
7. Faster more efficient graphics and use of memory
8. Automation!!!!: Calling and uploading or downloading files
at the time you specify (you don't have to be there. Like
programming your VCR) This is like script, but all the hard work
of programming is done by us. You just need to learn some real
simple things. Automation will be a sort of combined
programming menu using self learning or recording and the
already present autologin. In anycase this feature will
be planed out more.
9. Modem configuration setup.
10. Use two or more modems at the same time. This will enable
you to call two bbs's at the same time. For example you
could call one BBS and start downloading a file then call
another and read and reply to email. You'll need two modems and
phone lines.
11. There will be a Windows version of Nortel. Hopefully
before next year.

HOW TO USE THE MOUSE AND KEYBOARD WITH NORTEL:
If you have a mouse Nortel is very simple to use. Use the
Left mouse button to click on buttons. This Left button
works like the Enter key. You can use the Enter key to
activate the buttons that the cursor is currently on. The
right mouse button is used only in the dialling directory for
tagging entries. You will probably find using the keyboard is
also very easy especially if you just switched from an all
keyboard terminal program. If you only have a keyboard thats
fine as well. On the menus you will see that there is
sometimes a red coloured character press this character to
activate this button. ONLY in the terminal is it required that
you press ALT plus the red key. If you like you, can disable
the red key colour in the setup. The keys however remain
active. If there is no hot key (red key) then you can for
example press ESC to activate the exit buttons. A button like
INSERT or DEL, found in the dialling directory will be
activated by thoughs keys on your key board. Unforunatinally
it was impossible to use hot keys for every button. The setup
has many buttons with almost the same name, and the file
lister was made for a mouse. Too solve this problem Nortel
draws a fake mouse cursor that can be moved around using the
arrow keys. This fake cursor only works if a real mouse was
not detected. The fake cursor is activated by pressing the
Enter key. Also only in the file lister you can use the up and
down arrow keys to move the cursor. In menus with buttons,
only the side arrow keys work.
TERMINAL MENU:
SHELL (DOS SHELL)
This is usefule if you need to quickly go to dos to type some
commands with out exiting the program. You can type any valid
dos command here.
TEXT EDITOR:
Useful for editing or viewing text files while online etc....
And also works while downloading. This editor is limited to
700lines at current.
DOORWAY (DOOR WAY MODE):
This option disables all keys in Nortel so non of the ALT
commands work etc. This is useful if the online service you
are using needs to use the keys normally used by Nortel.
SETUP:
This option is used to set up Nortel to your specific needs
and modem configurations etc. We will go into more detail
later on about this option.
PAGE ( 2 )
DIAL (DIALLING DIRECTORY):
This option takes you into the dialling directory where you
can dial up bbses. More about this later.
BACK SCROLL:
If you want to go back and see something you missed and
scrolled of the screen then you can use the scroll back and
scroll your way back to where ever you want.
PATH (CHANGE DIRECTORY):
By default you are in the directory where Nortel is. If you
shelled to dos and changed the directory there by going to a
different directory and then shelled back into nortel then
this path will change to represent this current path. The PATH
button will allow you to change the path without shelling to
dos. All files downloaded go into this current path.
CHAT:
A useful option if you are directly connected to someone who
is also using a terminal program like NorTel. Chat will split
the screen in two parts and will show your typing on the
bottom half. Normally when calling a BBS, the BBS sends back
the keystrokes you send it and gets displayed on your screen.
A terminal program doesn't send characters back so your typing
doesn't appear.
FILE TRANSFER:
To download a file press pageup or pagedown or ALT-F this will
activate the download menu and gives you a list of 9
protocals. The best protocal is zmodem and you probably won't
use many of the others but in case you need them they are
there.
CAPTURE:
Often when online you will need to capture text this means you
will write text to the screen and to disk. NorTel's capture
dosn't need for you to enter a file name. NorTel automatically
makes a new file called screen.000. The extenchion 000
represents the number of the file. New files always are given
the highest number. For exsample if there are 2 files called
screen.010 and screen.013 in the NorTel dirrectary then the
new file name is called screen.014. To activate capture type
ALT-A. Now you will see 4 buttons.
-Open new file
-Keep ansi code
-Add to old file
-Keep ansi code
Choose "Open new file" to create a new file of all incoming
text.
PAGE ( 3 )
"Keep ansi code" will write the captured file with ansi codes.
Choose "Add to old file" to append incoming text to the
newest old capture file.
"Keep ansi code" write captured file with all ansi code.
Press ALT-A to stop the capturing of incoming text.
THE DIALING DIRECTORY:
This is one of the most important parts of the program, the
dialing directory used for calling your favourite BBS's and
online services. Here is a list of all the commands
and what they do.
DEL : This function deletes any bbs entry that the scroll
bar is currently positioned on.
INSERT : Used to make room for a new entry.
TAG ALL : Tages all entries in the currently loaded list
for dialling.
HOME : Used to move the scroll bar to the first entry.
PAGE UP : Scrolls upwards, a page at a time.
EDIT : Use to edit each entry. More on this under Entry
editor
RESTORES : Restores the current dialling list by
reloading it from disk. This is possible because all
changed are only saved when exiting Nortel. Restoring is
only necessary if you pressed on the delete button by
accident, however any other changed will also be
restored.
UNTAG ALL : Used to untage all taged entries.
END : Moves the scroll bar to the vary last entry on the
currently loaded directory.
DEFAULTS : Dials all tag entries, using their default
prefixes from the entries editor.
You can use the other prefixes to dial all taged
entries using that particular prefix. Example one day
you decided to call all bbs with you phone line
blocked, then you'd use the prefixes that sends the
code to bock your phone line.
PAGE ( 4 )
LOAD LIST : Press this button to load any desired
dialling directory.
THE NORTEL SETUP:
TERMINAL SETUP:
The terminal setup is the most important part of the
Nortel setup indeed! Here is a brief list of all the
options that norton terminal setup window offers you.
For a more technical explanation consult your modem
manual.
COMPORT : Used to set Nortel to the right com port.
Nortel will support up to four com ports. Set this option
to which ever com port your modem is on.
DATA BITS : You can set Nortel to work at either 8 (most
common) or 7 bits depending on what online service you
are going to connect to.
PARITY : Your options here areas follows None, even, odd,
mark, space
STOP BITS : You options here are simply 1 or 2.
BAUD RATE: Your options are 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600,
38400, 57400, 115200.
EMULATION : You have two options Ansi and TTY (plain
text).
HARDWARE FLOW CONTROL : Most protocols need this on.
SOFTWARE FLOW CONTROL : Keep this off.
Press the ESC key to exit or when done.
DIALLING SETUP:
These are the options you will find in the dialling setup
and an explanation of what they will do.
INITE STRING : This configures your modem when you start
up Nortel. This option is user definable, the default
ATZ this is what will be sent to your modem.
DIALLING PREFIXS 1 to 5:
These are user definable prefixes. They are very useful
what they do is they let you add a certain number(s) to
the beginning any number on the dialling directory. For
example if you are making calls out of your office and
you are dialling threw a PBX you would configer one of
the prefixes to send *9 before the number that is to be
dialed.
PAGE ( 5 )
MODEM RESPONSE STRING:
Nortel uses these responses to recognize what your modem
is doing. They also let you know what they are doing.
You may need to change these responses if your modem uses
different ones, however the default strings work with
most modems so don't change them unless you have
problems. Here is a list of the response strings in
order.
-CONNECT
-BUSY
-VOICE
-NO DIAL
-NO CARRIER
-FAX
-RING
PROTOCOL SETUP:
SETUP EXTERNAL PROTOCOLS:
You often will need to use external protocols, these are ones
which you will receive from BBSs and other online services and
are often shareware or public domain. You can use up to 8
external protocols with NorTel. We have already setup NorTel
to use hslink. However you will have to get hslink from a BBS.
Nortel does no use batch files, it uses an internal batch
process. All you have to do is enter some of the simple
information about the protocol. Because this part of
the setup may be tricky, we provide help right of the setup menu.
If the external protocol s designed properly you should have no
problem. The only thing you have to watch out for is when entering
the path and name to the protocol, make sure you include the
extension (.exe .com).
Next auto zmodem when on, automatically calls the internal
zmodem without you having to go to the transfer menu. Zmodem
always sends a string before transferring so NorTel recognizes this
string and automatically calls the internal zmodem if turned on.
You will have to turn auto zmodem off if you for some reason what
to use an external one such as DSZ, or GIFLINK.
BUTTON NAMES:
This is used for naming the buttons used in the dialling
directory such as the prefix buttons and the buttons used
for loading a dialling directory. You should name these
buttons to what you defined them to do for example if you
configured prefix 1 to enable call blocking you could
call this button "CallBlock" for example. The buttons
used for loading the dialling directories (all 4 of them)
You could name them to identify the different BBS list
you are using.
PAGE ( 6 )
ENTRY EDITOR:
Here you can and or change BBS names or phone numbers. Also
here you can pick which auto loggin to use and which dialling
prefix is to be used as default. For the auto loggin you'll
also want to enter your name and password.
HOW TO EDIT AUTO LOGGIN:
If you press on the big button for entering edit mode, you
will be able to edit the text in the yellow bars. This text is
what NorTel uses to do an auto login. It's very simple, but it
maybe a little tricky to get the right delays in. You'll
likely avoid delay problems by setting them higher so the BBS
you just called has time to send all it's screens and is ready
for you input. We provide some examples and a little window
pops up to show all the functions so there no need to describe
this any further. One thing that isn't describe is the '{'
bracket. You can use this to describe that particular auto
loggin string, but be sure to put it right after the end of
your string, else if you add space, then those spaces will be
sent too.
